Hand-colored etching, 1950

Claire Dooner Phillips (1887-1960) was an artist in California and Prescott, Arizona. Through much of her career she considered herself a painter and specialized in the palette knife technique (see Watson Lake). In the 1930s she and a group of students and friends produced block print Christmas cards. After World War II, she began to produce etchings of Arizona landscapes and seems to have concentrated principally on printmaking until her death.
A sample of her art with some discussion of how it was produced is provided here. The site is in preparation and additional pages will be added frequently. All art is by Phillips unless noted otherwise.
