CLARA IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

Clara Dooner is listed as teaching art (1915) and freehand drawing (1915-16) at Hollywood High School, but health issues apparently caused her to leave teaching at some point.

She was a founding member of the Laguna Beach Art Association (1918), but the reason for her association with Laguna Beach is unclear. Anna Hills, who was also a founding member, was a student of Arthur Dow a number of years before Clara. Dooner took a sketching class from Paul Lauritz (there is a Christmas card from the Lauritz family in her collection), who was an active member of the Laguna Beach group but also lived and taught in Los Angeles.

Dooner was a member of the California Art Club, as was Lauritz and another Christmas card correspondent, Ruth M. Bennett. Claire exhibited there in 1924 and with the Painters and Sculptors of Los Angeles in 1923. She was also a member of the Women Painters of the West, although her involvement with this group is unknown.
